Best Outfits for a Newborn Session
Photographing newborns is possibly one of my favorite photography sessions. Your beautiful new babe is almost always sleeping quietly or cooing away in mom’s arms (well not always but we will make it work no matter what!), which makes for such a peaceful and exciting session. That being said, I often run into parents stressing about what to dress newborns in for their session. Not sure what to dress your little one in? Don’t stress, I’m highlighting some of my go-to looks and outfits for newborn photography!
First thing’s first, skip the baby jeans. Yes, they are cute, but they have their place and newborn photography isn’t it. I always find that these kinds of outfits make your baby look a lot older than they are, and we don’t want that! These are the moments you want to cherish, as your little one won’t be this tiny ever again. Personally, I love a neutral sleeper. While planning the arrival of my own, I found some really beautiful options from Rylee and Cru, and Quincy Mae. My other favorite spots to stock up on affordable basics are Zara and H&M.
As you’re shopping, keep in mind comfortable and most importantly neutral. Knits are a great option as they add a lot of texture to the photography session, which helps to add depth! That being said, you’ll want to dress them for the season so a chunky knit sweater in the August heat is not going to make much sense.
One thing I like to remind people is to keep it simple! You don’t need to spend countless hours stressing about the perfect outfit. When you look back on these photos, you’re most likely going to look at how tiny and beautiful the human you created was all that time ago. One of the best ways to stay simple is to have your babe swaddled or even better, wearing only a diaper. With newborns changing so quickly over the first few months of their life, you’ll want to document every little roll that you possibly can!
My last tip is to have a few accessories on hand. This can be in the form of a hat, a bonnet, or a headband. It can also be a neutral swaddle or knit blanket, I love the look this creates. With these, I can’t stress enough (again), keep it simple. You may think a fluorescent flower headband is adorable now, but one day you may not be very pleased with your decision! Whatever you decide, remember that these photos are meant to capture your little family during this new and exciting time in your life. My goal is to preserve these moments of you looking as natural and happy as possible!
