Beach Maternity Photos: Maine in the "off season"
This moody beach maternity session was my first session back from my own maternity leave! It was a dreary May day in coastal Maine, but that did stop us from creating some magical images for Merry + Hugh before their family of two became a family of three.
What do you envision when you think of a beach maternity session? Probably some crashing waves, and lots of sunshine on a summer day. And while turquoise water and golden light are a beautiful combination, there is something about the overcast skies and calm New England waters against a rocky shoreline. It creates incredibly cozy, creative images.
That’s exactly what I had in mind for this maternity shoot. After having a baby of my own, I was ecstatic to get back to shooting lifestyle photography. I had been working with a mentor, investing in my business, and honing in on creative skills as I eagerly awaited my first shoot back. I wanted a session to challenge me creatively, one that would allow me to try new things and experiment with techniques. Merry + Hugh so graciously went along with everything I wanted to try for their session in Falmouth, Maine. They were extremely laid-back and fun, which always makes for incredible images!
And maybe I loved their session a little extra because I had my fan club nearby. My husband came, along with my teeny tiny newborn daughter. It’s something that doesn’t happen very often, but was so appreciated. It made the day feel like a family outing! Perfect for the new mama who wanted to work, but also got to stay close to my sweet Kaylie Drew!!
Merry + Hugh were also the perfect examples of how anytime is the right time for your maternity session (or any family session). You can’t control what season or the weather during your pregnancy, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create beautiful photos. So often I hear from couples that think they shouldn’t do photos because it’s the wrong time of year. There’s no such thing!
This Falmouth beach maternity photography session proves it, too. If you envision less of a moody vibe for your maternity session, but it’s in the season of grey skies here in Maine, consider an in-home maternity session! But if you do love that chilly beach feel, well then Maine is the place for you! I seriously can’t get enough of its little seaside cottages, rocky beaches, and serene skies. For more coastal New England inspiration, you can check out this family session in Portland!
